Management of Lithuanian grassland based on satellite data and innovations in agricultural science
About the innovation / research
During the project, a service "Management of Lithuanian grassland based on satellite data and innovations in agricultural science" was developed. This service was based on spatial and ground survey data. The service provided allowed farmers to reduce costs and achieve farm profitability more efficiently, contributed to the preservation of the environment and increased the potential of the soil by mitigating the effects of climate change.
In the interactive database, farmers and advisors were able to identify problems on the farm and select the most appropriate solution to problem using the developed analytical tools. They were able to:
• to evaluate grasslands on farms (local resources), their suitability for field conditions available (soil relief, region, granulometric composition, etc.);
• to calculate the forecasted forage production according to the productivity of grasslands;
• to determine the optimal cutting time of grass for fodder preparation and grazing;
• to create mixtures of grasslands adapted to the conditions of farm fields;
• to self-assess the efficiency of the performed works by reducing costs of working time and costs of maintenance of grassland (costs of fertilizers, machinery, fuel, and employees) in accordance with the principles of sustainable farming.
Also, an interactive database with public access allowed remote monitoring of changes in farm grasslands (moisture, grassland growth, chlorophyll content, etc.), use of collected information on grassland maintenance and use of automatically generated recommendations.
