Improvement and dissemination of innovative technologies for breeding and maintenance of larch, spruce, birch and black alder plantation forests
About the innovation / research
The project improved and practically tested shorter-rotation plantation forest establishment, management and cultivation technologies for larch, spruce, birch and black alder on unused and agriculturally unsuitable land. Demonstration plantations were established and assessed in different eco-climatic regions of Lithuania. The technology covers tree species and site selection according to soil fertility and moisture, genetically improved planting material, planting density and layout, soil preparation, maintenance, protection and tending up to the first thinning. Containerised seedlings and tube planting tools can extend the planting season and increase labour productivity. Practical recommendations were prepared for forest owners, farmers and advisers.
