Project goals
To develop unique feed and premix formulations to enhance the metabolic efficiency of selenium and iodine transfer in vivo into eggs using artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, and to evaluate the quality of the developed products through biomedical research. An AI-driven solution integrates biotechnology, digitalization, and a sustainable food production model, enabling simultaneous improvement of product quality and assurance of animal welfare.
Target group
Poultry farms and companies, feed and feed manufacturers, agricultural consultants, research institutions, universities and colleges, as well as consumers interested in products with higher nutritional value. The project results are relevant for sector participants seeking to implement innovative feed technologies, improve production efficiency and create more functional food products.
Detailed summary
Innovative feed and premix formulations enriched with selenium and iodine were developed, ensuring efficient transfer of these microelements into eggs. The eggs showed significantly increased microelement content-iodine levels increased more than twofold, and selenium levels by approximately 1.5 times compared to conventional eggs.
A hyperspectral camera and artificial intelligence models were applied to assess egg quality and automatically identify (from visual data) which eggs were enriched with microelements.
A clinical study involving 130 volunteers (VU Faculty of Medicine, SEJOD) was conducted. The results demonstrated that consumption of these enriched eggs significantly increased iodine levels in the human body, while selenium levels also increased, though to a lesser extent. This confirms that the innovation has a direct positive impact on human health and microelement balance.
Following this project, new opportunities for applying AI in the agriculture and livestock sectors have emerged:
A 7 million Eur project, “HORIZON-RIA project “Nourishing Europe's Future through Regenerative Livestock Feed (NUTRIFEEDS)”, funded under the EU Horizon Europe programme (Project No. 101179992), (implementation period: 2025-09-01 to 2029-08-31).
A 300k Eur project “Machine Learning Algorithms for Cattle Health Analysis and Prediction (MALACA)” (implementation period: 2024-09-17 to 2026-08-31).
