Project goals
To encourage dairy cattle farms to implement alternative technologies and apply biotechnological solutions to improve the quality of cattle colostrum and provide additional functional properties that will positively impact the health of newborn calves and the entire herd. After the implementation of the project and the introduction of colostrum biorefining technologies in the farms, a significant economic effect is expected to be obtained due to the improved functional value of colostrum and ensured biosafety because the instances of infectious diseases in newborn calves will be controlled more effectively.

Detailed summary
The intended project result is a healthier dairy farm herd using lower amounts of antimicrobial agents. In Lithuanian dairy cattle farms, introducing research-based technologies for biomodification of colostrum will enable more effective control of disease outbreaks in newborn calves, ensuring the excellent health of the entire herd in the future. As a result, costs for animal treatment would be reduced, as well as environmental pollution with antimicrobial substances and the development of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms. Additionally, significant economic benefits would be obtained due to the preventive effect of biomodified colostrum, which would ensure better animal health on farms, as costs for treating and controlling bacterial diseases and secondary infections would decrease. The project is also essential for the reduction of problems of environmental pollution with non-degrading substances (antimicrobial drugs) because using biomodified colostrum, due to its antimicrobial and additional functional properties, would reduce the need for antibiotics in farms. The Lithuanian University of Health Sciences will use the results of applied scientific research obtained during the project to improve the study programs and, in cooperation with the employees of the consulting institution, raise the qualifications of animal science and veterinary workers and specialists, consulting agricultural companies and farmers.
